An autumn visit to Cahokia Mounds State Historic Site offered a serene setting amidst the ancient Indian mounds. Now called, Cahokia, this the site of a large Mississippian city during pre-historic times. The large mounds are not considered burial grounds but were erected for ceremonial purposes by accomplished builders of small homes and grand structures. Cahokia was one of the largest ancient cities north of Mexico.
