Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken on the Hooker Valley Trail located near Mount Cook, New Zealand

Time

Late afternoon as the sun was starting to set behind the mountain ranges

Lighting

I wanted to capture the subtle water movement, whilst not drawing away from the highlights from the snowy capped mountain peaks.

Equipment

To achieve this I used a ND grad filter. My gear was supported on a tripod set amoungst the rocks by the water. Shot on a Canon 6D, with 24-105 f/4 lens.

Inspiration

I was racing the light of day to make it back to my car safely. It was. 20km round journey and I was on my way back. I always make sure to turn around as most often enough, the greatest photo opportunities come from behind your field of view.

Editing

Processed in Photoshop, simple crop and straighten horizon, with minor tweaks to foreground, used a ND filter to neutralise the foreground to suit the sky.

In my camera bag

Feedback

As mentioned before, always check what's behind you, you'll be greatly surprised what photographic opportunity may arise.
