A video shoot at my studios had been using a haze machine for 12 hours, as the shoot finished the sun was setting through the windows and gave a beautiful look to the studios.

Golden sunsets + hazey light = fantastic silhouettes

Behind The Lens

Location

I own a location studio which is the second floor of a victorian mill in Bolton, England, which was being used for a music video by a band called the Dan Reeves network. They had had a smoke machine on for approximately 12 hours which had given a low haze throughout the room, not an easy feet when it is over 3000sq ft of space.

Time

It was approximately 5pm on an early Winter's day.

Lighting

All natural sunlight as the sun was setting.

Equipment

Canon 7D with a 24-70mm lens, and thats it.

Inspiration

As the shoot came to an end the sun was setting, yes we occasionally get sun in Bolton, and we get incredible light in the studio when it does. I grabbed my camera and started to take images of the band packing up in the hazy sunset in the studio. The guitarist was stood and I asked him to stay still for 30 seconds whilst I grabbed a shot. He obliged, posed in a typical guitar players pose and I snapped one picture! That was all it needed.

Editing

My camera's WB was set for a cloudy day to make the orange's a bit more intense, and I tweaked the levels to give a deeper shadow, but the editing was very minimal.

In my camera bag

In my bag I have my trusty canon 7D, my go to Canon 24-70mm, Canon 70 - 200mm, 3 Yongnou YN560 speed-lights and a Canon speed-light trigger, which allows me to trigger up to 4 speed-lights.

Feedback

I was lucky in the fact that my location studio gave me an opportunity for this image to be captured, I was twice as lucky in that the weather gave me the opportunity too. However, I would say always be ready to take the opportunities when they arise. I was there taking the photographs and saw the opportunity to grab the shot.
