Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken at farm in Upstate New York. I love animals and became fascinated by the pigs at the farm. I started taking closeups of the pigs' snouts and when I reviewed my photographs, this one just spoke to me.

Time

This photograph was taken in the afternoon. My husband and I were celebrating our 6th Anniversary week by visiting places local to us that we had never been to before. We love exploring farms and being outdoors. This one farm we visited was amazing, and since it's was the middle of the week in Mid-May there were not too many people around. They let you roam the farm by yourself and explore. Most of the animals were not out in the pastures that day which turned out to be perfect because I was able to get some amazing photographs of them.

Lighting

I love natural light. I try not to use my flash unless it's absolutely necessary. I try very hard to capture a split second moment as I see it and as I experience it. This photograph was taken in natural light.

Equipment

This was photograph was taken with a Sony a58 using a 28-75mm lens. No other equipment was used.

Inspiration

I love nature and I love the outdoors. I am all about capturing those split second moments that will never happen again and freezing that one moment in time forever. I love animals and was drawn to the pigs that day. As I started taking photographs of them, I started thinking about how I could take this photograph differently than just focusing on the entire pig. I loved the pigs' snouts and I thought that would make an awesome picture. I started experimenting with zooming through my lens and getting closer to the pigs and shooting from different angles. When I got home and reviewed my pictures, this one really stood out to me.

Editing

I am a "natural" photographer meaning that I don't actually believe in any post-processing. I love for my photographs to be unretouched in any shape or form. I work hard to capture those split second moments in time and will take as many photographs of a subject as necessary until I feel that I have truly captured them as I see them. No post-processing was done with this photograph.

In my camera bag

I always have my Sony a58 with me and most of the time I use the same lens, my trusty 28-75mm lens. My husband is a photographer too and usually he carries the extra lenses in his bag, so if I need another lens to shoot something that is further away or would like to shoot something macro I will ask my husband to borrow a lens from his bag. I try to keep my bag as light as possible since I never know where I will be shooting next, or climbing up or through to get that next awesome picture.

Feedback

My best advice is that sometimes the more natural the photograph the better. I could mess with the colors, the shadows, etc... but it wouldn't truly be that one moment anymore that I worked so hard to capture. Yes, I would have the memory of that moment but I wouldn't have that remembrance of that spark I felt when I knew I captured the image exactly as I wanted. I know nowadays it's so easy to do post-production work on the computer and maybe that's why I go against the norm... to be a little different and to stay true to myself and my values.
