Behind The Lens

Location

No big mystery for this photo. Westminster bridge over the river Thames in London.

Time

I was working in London for a week, and the only time I had to get out with my camera was in the evening. Luckily it was mid summer so that gave me plenty of time to get to the location and set up my gear. As I recall I took the photo about 9pm.

Lighting

I wanted the sun to be already set when I took the photo, but not so long after sunset that the sky was completely dark. I wanted some blue in it. This gave me enough light in the sky to maintain interest, while also being dark enough to open the shutter long enough to capture the light trails of the double decker buses going past

Equipment

Nikon D750, manfrotto tripod, Hoya ND16 filter and a remote shutter release.

Inspiration

I wanted to capture a few iconic London landmarks while I was working there, and after a bit of research on line, my mind was made up to try and get something a little more interesting that the bog standard shot. I really liked the look of the traffic trail photos I saw online, so I thought I'd give it a shot. This was my first attempt at that kind of photo, and I'm pretty pleased with the result. I subsequently managed to get St Paul's Cathedral and Tower Bridge as well. It was a fun week!

Editing

Not really. A little adjustment of the highlights and shadows and that was about it.

In my camera bag

It depends on where I'm going. If I'm travelling with my camera, as I was when this photo was taken, I'll usually have my Tamron 24-70 f2.8 and my Nikon 20mm f2.8. If I think I'll need it I'll bring my tripod, but it's not something I take everywhere with me. If I'm taking photos close to home, I do like using my Tamron 70-200 f2.8, which is an amazing lens.

Feedback

Make sure the photo is taken when there is still enough light in the sky to maintain interest. Ignore the crowds of tourists and locals, and focus on getting the right position for the shot. One thing that adds interest to this shot is the bike and bus markings on the road, and I wouldn't have got these had I not got down low, so always search for the finer details that will set your photo apart. Lastly, try not to get run over by a bus!
