Behind The Lens

Location

This photograph was taken at the Duxford Air Show in September 2016. This show commemorated the 75th anniversary of the Battle of Britain and featured the Duxford "big wing" of 17 Spitfires and Seafires filling the sky at the same time.

Time

This was taken during mid-afternoon the flying display by the "Sally B", a flying B17 that featured in the film "Memphis Bell".

Lighting

It was a bright day, but with some cloud cover. This helped me set the camera to capture the action shots from the flying display.

Equipment

This was my first real use of a DSLR camera. I had recently bought a Nikon D3300 and used the accompanying 55-200 lens

Inspiration

I was primarily at the air show to see the rare, massed flight of Spitfires (and Seafires), but took the opportunity to capture the other aircraft displays including this B17. I took over 300 photographs that day and this was one of 10 or so of this aircraft.

Editing

I used the Topaz Labs suite of image processing software, again for the first time. I used the adaptive exposure and micro contrast capabilities along with some detail enhancement. Suddenly the photo just "popped" into its current form and knew I had captured something special.

In my camera bag

As a newcomer I have relatively little equipment. The camera came with two lenses and I have added a couple of spare batteries and some extra SD cards.

Feedback

Whether this was right or not, I set the the camera to a fixed focus at near infinity given all the planes were flying at distance. Being a bright day helped, but I also boosted the ISO setting to 200 in order to maximise the shutter speed to capture the fast action.
