Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in a small park on hwy 200 in Montana, USA. To get the angle I wanted I needed to leap to a rock in the water about three feet from the shore. The tricky part was to not fall in or drop my camera l. I made it both to and from the rock. So all was good.

Time

This was shot at about 1100 mountain time. The sun was pretty high so if the clouds weren't there it would have been a more of a harsh look.

Lighting

There was a slight overcast that cut down on the harsh light.

Equipment

I used the Nikon D300 with a Sigma 28-70. It was mounted on a manfroto tripod and a Kirk's ball head. I used a Tiffen 10 stop nd filter.

Inspiration

I stopped in the park to take a break. So I walked around to see how the river looked. I took a few shots of rocks in the water and also of some reflections of some trees. As I walked up the bank I saw the bridge. Then I cleared some trees and saw this scene. I took some shots from the bank but they didn't have the look I wanted. Then I saw the rock in the water. I thought I could make the jump to it, but if I get wet it was okay. Just dont drop the camera. I set the camera up before jumped. I got the shot and stayed dry.

Editing

I use lightroom 6 to do my work. On this photo I used it to adjust the exposure and the colors. When I first worked this photo i didn't know a lot about how to use lightroom very well. Since then I have learned more and have reworked this a couple of times and it now looks a little better.

In my camera bag

I now have a Nikon d810 because I dropped my d300 as I was shooting dragon flies. I have nikkor 24mm 2.8, nikkor 24-85mm 3.5-4.5 vr, nikkor 70-200mm 2.8 vr and Tamron 70-300mm 4-5.6 vc. The tiffen 10 stop nd and a b+w polarizer. The vr feature makes it so much easier for me to get the best results.

Feedback

When you get to a place to photograph dont look for the easy shot. Sometimes a good photo is the easy shot, but a lot of times you need to look for the shot that makes you excited. When you find that shot you might need to work it to get the most out of the location. Like me having to jump to the rock to get the angle I wanted. Just dont put yourself at risk of getting hurt or worse. No photo is worth that.
