Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in a vacant lot that I saw as I was heading down an off ramp in Troutdale, OR, USA.

Time

It was about 6:00 pm. I try to start shooting a little earlier but this was the end of the day and didn't expect to find anything. So I guess the lesson there is to look for photo ops at any time any where.

Lighting

There was nothing special about the light. It was late in the evening on an overcast day which made for nice soft light.

Equipment

I used a Nikon D300 with a Sigma 70-300 macro lens. I put the set up on a Manfrotto tripod and head.

Inspiration

I drive a truck and it was the end of my shift. At the end of the off ramp that I was taking for the truck stop there was a vacant lot. I enjoy shooting flowers, so when I saw some in the grass I knew I had to get some shots in. I parked and grabed my bag that is always by my side. When I got to the lot I started shooting but couldn't see anything special. I found this flower off by itself. Did a few shots from the side and the top. Then after looking at it trying to find a different view, I decided to get low. I put the tripod legs out flat, turned on the macro switch and aimed up to the bottom of the flower. I was probably quite a sight composing this shot with my rear end in the air.

Editing

I used photoshop to do a small amount of color adjustment.

In my camera bag

I have a backpack bag that is always ready to go. At the time of this shot I had a Nikon D300. I have replaced it, after I dropped it, with a Nikon D810. I have very well used Sigma 28-70 and 70-300 macro. There is also a Nikkor 24mm pirme. Lastly, there is my workhorse, my Nikkor 70-200 vr. If I can, I use this lens because of its speed, durability and vibration reduction feature.

Feedback

If someone wants to take flower pictures, try to find different angles other than the standard shot that a lot of others take. If possible shoot on overcast days to use the soft light.
