Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the hallway outside of my office at work. The extinguisher hangs on the wall and I would walk by it every day not really paying notice to it. I finally noticed it and decided it would make a cool picture.

Time

I took this around 7 or 8 pm after a video shoot. I came in from the shoot and was in the process of putting all my video gear away. I like to stop what I'm doing periodically and really try and think about what I'm doing so I don't forget something (It also helps with stress relief). That's when I noticed this extinguisher on the wall. I love impromptu photo opportunities so I whipped out my camera and snapped this real quick.

Lighting

I love to use the lighting a scene provides so I force myself to get creative with the shot. The lights in the office are typical fluorescent light bulbs which usually isn't anything to boast about. I try and capture images as close to how they appear in their environment and this image had a unique shadow structure that appealed to me.

Equipment

I shot this image free-hand using my Nikon D3200 with a 35mm prime lens. I'm a minimalist when it comes to equipment. Too much equipment becomes a distraction to me and I prefer to stay as present in the moment as I can when taking a photo.

Inspiration

A large part of photography for me is the seeing beauty of the world in ways that are unique. I know that I didn't look at this fire extinguisher and say to myself, "Wow! What a beautiful fire extinguisher! I think I'll take a picture of it." It happens very organically. I only realized it's true beauty after I took the picture. So, I guess my inspiration for this image was the fact that this fire extinguisher had gone unnoticed so I thought it was time someone noticed it.

Editing

I added a bit of definition to the image and increased the saturation in the mid and low tones. I really wanted the red to pop but also bring out some of the complexity in the metallic finish. I usually try and do subtle edits (Sometimes I go crazy).

In my camera bag

Again, I'm a minimalist (also poor) so I keep the only three lenses I have in my bag: a 18-50mm zoom lens, a 50-200mm zoom lens, and my 35mm prime which is usually on the camera at all times. I also have a monopod and a three handle stabilizer in my bag but I use those for very specific occasions. As a whole I usually only have the camera and one lens with me because I like to challenge myself and see things with a different perspective.

Feedback

Always be looking, really looking hard, at the world you live in. Don't be afraid to stop and explore. In most cases, the subject isn't what's important, it's how you show it to someone else. As for technical aspects of the image, use a very shallow depth of field (f1.8-2.0) and a faster shutter-speed if shooting free-hand ( 1/1000 or higher). Be confident in your imagination and never stop looking.
