Behind The Lens

Location
This photo was taken on top of Grouse Mountain near Vancouver BC. This is one of two beautiful grizzly bears who were orphaned as cubs and now reside in an enclosure on top of Grouse.
Time
I took this photo at about 1000 am in early April of this year. It was about a two hour hike to the top of Grouse Mt on a warm and sunny Spring day. This bear had just come out of hibernation and was very active that day.
Lighting
Although it wasnt late in the day when I took this picture there was still a lot of snow on the ground which made for a very bright setting. I basically took a ton of photos of this bear as he moved about and decided this photo's lighting worked best for the image I was after.
Equipment
This was shot with a Canon EOS 70D and a Sigma 150-600 mm lens.
Inspiration
I love nature and wildlife photography so when I just received my new zoom lens the night prior as a gift from my husband I was eager to try it out ASAP. Grouse Mt is a favorite hiking destination for me so it seemed like a good place to experiment with my new lens.
Editing
I used post-processing to adjust the tone of this photo in order to bring out the red color in his coat as well as to emphasize the detail of his wet coat. (He'd just been swimming)
In my camera bag
The equipment that I like to have in my camera bag at all times includes my Canon EOS 70D camera, 18-200 mm Canon lens, 150-600 Sigma lens, Canon 2x extender and my Vanguard tripod. This is fine for the times when Im driving to my destination however when it comes to steep multi-day hikes this makes for a very heavy bag after factoring in other necessities such as a tent, food and vino :) In those cases the bear minimum equipment pieces I bring along are my Canon camera with 18-200 mm lens and tripod.
Feedback
If your subject is a Grizzly bear I think that a zoom lens is necessary for a shot similar to this unless you have another way of getting close enough. In addition to equipment essentials I would recommend taking a lot of photos since the unwanted ones can be deleted later. Besides that you just need your subject to do a few nice poses for you and this could be weather/season dependent. For example I doubt that I would have been able to capture this same image on a hot summer day because this bear would have been much less active.
