Thank you. He was fascinating to watch at work. And a great subject to photograph.

Behind The Lens

Location

At upper Pangboche, a village at 3,985m in the Khumbu (Mount Everest) region of Nepal.

Time

Late morning.

Lighting

This shot was taken outdoors in fine, high altitude conditions, so the shadows were quite harsh.

Equipment

A Nikon F801S and 28-70 Sigma lens. The shot was taken on Fuji Velvia ISO 50 slide film. I don’t have the camera settings recorded.

Inspiration

This is a mani stone carver named Ang Kin Zum, At the time he was 77, suffering from a bronchial disorder. Since then he has died and, with him, his ancient art has faded a little. It was a privilege to be able to sit with him and take candid pictures of him while he was in action.

Editing

Once I had a digital scan of the original image I was able soften the harsh shadows in Photoshop and bring out some of the details a little more.

In my camera bag

I love the mountains, so as little as possible - at present a Nikon D750 camera body, a Nikkor 24-120 small zoom and the 55-300 bigger zoom, a spare battery and beaten up lightweight tripod - good for hiking. If I'm going for a summit then it's even less - a compact Nikon P7800 with mirrorless through the lens digital view finder, full manual operation and RAW file capture - absolutely great when you still want to control your photography but need to keep moving and can't afford to have stuff hanging off you.

Feedback

To get this candid close up image I had to establish a rapport with Ang Kin Zum. That way I had the time and freedom to really capture the craftsman at work.
