Dawn.Lighting
Any landscape photographer knows that dawn and dusk are the best times to catch beautiful light – the so called “magic hour”. In the mountains I think dawn is usually best of all.Equipment
A Nikon P7800. For this shot (actually 3 stitched together) the zoom setting was 28mm, ISO 100, F8 and shutter 1/50 sec.Inspiration
Being in such a place on a clear, still dawn is inspiration enough – perfect conditions.Editing
After doing adjustments in Camera RAW to bring out detail in light and shadow on each of the three images in this series, I then stitched them and did further fine tuning in PhotoShop.In my camera bag
I love the mountains, so as little as possible - at present a Nikon D750 camera body, a Nikkor 24-120 small zoom and the 55-300 bigger zoom, a spare battery and beaten up lightweight tripod - good for hiking. If I'm going for a summit then it's even less - a compact Nikon P7800 with mirrorless through the lens digital view finder, full manual operation and RAW file capture - absolutely great when you still want to control your photography but need to keep moving and can't afford to have stuff hanging off you.Feedback
Be prepared to sleep out in very cold places so that you can be the early bird that catches the worm. For this image I spent a night shivering in my bivy bag in sub zero conditions. When I packed up my stuff next morning my ground mat had frozen to the snow beneath it.
