Behind The Lens

Location

In March, late summer, at a campsite at 1,300m on Biggs Tops, Kahurangi National Park, New Zealand.

Time

Dusk.

Lighting

It was one of those perfect dusks, where there’s plenty of cloud about to catch the light and add drama, while also diffusing it a bit so the lovely soft colours come through.

Equipment

A Nikon P7800. This shot is a stitch of two, taken with zoom setting at 28mm, ISO 100, F4 and shutter 1/40 sec.

Inspiration

Beautiful light, really interesting, rich setting with tarn, peaks, clouds and good company.

Editing

Adjustments in Camera RAW to bring out detail in light and shadow, then some further minor polishing in PhotoShop.

In my camera bag

I love the mountains, so as little as possible - at present a Nikon D750 camera body, a Nikkor 24-120 small zoom and the 55-300 bigger zoom, a spare battery and beaten up lightweight tripod - good for hiking. If I'm going for a summit then it's even less - a compact Nikon P7800 with mirrorless through the lens digital view finder, full manual operation and RAW file capture - absolutely great when you still want to control your photography but need to keep moving and can't afford to have stuff hanging off you. Sadly my P7800 malfunctioned several times on this trip – possibly moisture and cold have caught up with it. So I’ve just replaced it with a Lumix TZ2200 – bigger sensor, wider zoom range, smaller unit, still full manual operation and RAW files.

Feedback

This was a premeditated hunt the sunset drama shot. The weather forecast came true and we got the kind of conditions we hoped for. But you have to get out there and chase down these kinds of magical situations. It takes effort to camp out on the tops.
