My husband and I raised $5,000 to ride in a charity bicycle ride down the Pacific Coast Highway in the Fall of 2013. As a stage IV breast cancer survivor, I wanted to give back to an organization called Young Survival Coalition. It helped by connecting me with other young survivors. I was only 28 at the time of my initial diagnosis in 2010. After the ride, we drove up to San Francisco and my husband took me to Napa Valley which was on my bucket list of places I want to see. We pulled over at this vineyard and I took this photo. I love the beautiful colors and the perfect rows of grapevines.

I took this photo while my husband and I were driving through Napa Valley. We had just completed a charity bike ride down the Pacific Coast Highway for a breast cancer organization, and we decided to take the opportunity to drive up North before heading back home to South Dakota. I have been dealing with breast cancer myself since 2010, so it was a much needed vacation. While we were driving, I noticed this gorgeous vineyard with the quaint buildings on the property and I knew it was a memory I wanted to capture. I wanted to make sure I included the pretty red and purple Wildflowers. I also loved the angle looking straight down the rows of grape vines. The hills in the background added to the overall majesty of the vineyard.Time
It was late afternoon around 4:30pm and it was Fall of 2013. The sunset was at a perfect place for this photo. I think we lucked out on the timing.Lighting
The lighting turned out beautifully and I chose to adjust carefully so that the purple flowers would show up a bit better.Equipment
I actually used my cell phone camera of all things! It was a Droid S4 I believe. Unfortunately, I do not own a nice camera yet, but I hope to one day.Inspiration
My inspiration was living in the moment and capturing the moment to look back on for years to come. The vineyard, the building, the hills and the Wildflowers all came together to make this beautiful landscape so I knew I had to capture it! Fall has always been my favorite time of year so I'm always enjoying the scenery.Editing
I believe I used one of the filters in Instagram that brought out the different colors a bit better and I cropped out some power lines that were at the top of the photo in order to give it a more natural feel.In my camera bag
So far I only have my cell phone. I know I could take so many beautiful shots if I could afford a nice Canon camera or something like it. It will be a little while before I can afford one though as I still have medical bills to pay due to my cancer.Feedback
My advice is really simple. Always be paying attention to your surroundings. Some of the best photos come from chance encounters with nature and landscapes. The right time of day is important as well when taking landscape photos.
