Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken in windy hills of Ireland. We always go for a drive on Sundays, and mountains are 15 minutes away from our house,so we are often going there for a walk.

Time

My favourite time of day, which is the golden hour. It gives this whimsical effect to a photograph, combined with stylish vintage clothing this type of light- for me-makes a picture. Here the title is 'Indiana Jones' as my son really looks like from my favourite movie from my childhood.

Lighting

I love the golden tones that are reflecting in the grass. Light also spills gently on the edges of the face and shirt, and such a delicate shine is possible only at the softness of sunset. I also take pictures at sunrise, but the light is more red at the time,so 8 out of 10 times -I will choose sunset over any other light.

Equipment

I'm using nikon d 700, here with Tamron 24-70 mm lense. Natural light, hand held.

Inspiration

It's always my kids who inspire me. I document their play on a daily basis

Editing

I had to bring the colours back to the sky, as in RAW file they are a bit washed out. I use PS CC for my post-processing. Here I've used for instance: curves, levels, colour balance d&b and high-pass.

In my camera bag

D700 and two lenses: 24-70mm tamron, and Sigma macro HSM 105 mm

Feedback

I always manually adjust the settings to capture my sunsets. For the picture itself, you need to practise a lot, to try and learn about when to press the shutter button. It has to be a moment in time when something interesting is happening, when you see a movement, of facial expression that-captured in a frame-will tell a story. It's the most important aspect of my photography.
