Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken during the beginning of my second year at Algonquin College for Photography Program. This image was produced in their studios.

Time

I was having a rough day and thought what better way to cheer myself up then to do a photoshoot. I called up a few friends to see if they were free to hang out and do a fun photoshoot. Although last minute, we made the night out of the photoshoot. Going from 10:00pm-1:00am! It was around midnight when this image was in the midst of perfecting.

Lighting

For each model, I continuously changed my lighting around to experiment. Always having at least 3 lights prepared. For this image, to get the backlight, I ended up having to use a friend as a light-stand just to get the backlight haloing her. Then there was myself, on the floor trying my best to get the right angle. We may have been laughing our butts off having a good time; but I knew this was going to be an exceptional shot!

Equipment

This image was shot with a Canon 5D Mark iii camera and an EF24-105mm f/4 IS USM lens. For the lighting, Speedotrons, diffused beauty dish, and a parabolic. On and off I would use a 5in1 reflector if needed. And always, a colour checker!

Inspiration

Originally the photoshoot's theme was "Love yourself!" being able to be comfortable in your own skin to help create confidence. However, when producing this specific image, the notion evolved. It became about knowing. Trusting in one's self and being faithful to one's heart. Essentially, Intuition. Either believed that it's a spiritual connection or purely instincts. Intuition is something we all have to help guide ourselves thought anything. This image became one of my portfolio pieces along side others at www.willowlamoureux.com/2016-spirituality/.

Editing

Like most of my portraits, I do colour corrections, basic contrasting if needed, dodging and burning if needed, etc. However, I did not have to do too much of that for this image. I enhanced the blue and desaturated the other colours within the image. I wanted to have a complimentary colour scheme, blue and orange, to have harmony in the image. Blue being the dominate colour to represent trust and loyalty. As for the rest of the editing, smudging the nails, simple cloning of skin and hair to clean up the image, and cropping to 11in by 14in at resolution of 300ppi.

In my camera bag

After graduating from Algonquin's Photography Program, I got my self my first full-framed DSLR and prime lens. I currently have a Canon 5D Mark iii, 85mm f/1.2 telephoto lens, tripod, camera bag, reflector, video bag, Canon Rebel T3i, and a zoom to go with it. I am currently saving up for my own studio/portable light equipment (ie. profotos). It's going to be tough but defiantly worth it to pursue my dream career.

Feedback

Experiment! Play with lighting! Study it! Watch how it falls and wraps around your subject. Move your lights all around and don't be afraid to take your time if you need to. The slightest tilt or shift can make the biggest difference. Above all, enjoy what you do and never stop challenging yourself.
