This photo represents the fears that cling to us, blurring our path of life. Honestly, this was one of the most rewarding shoots I have done. It was something really different for me, something that I wanted to do because I knew I had to. I knew that I needed to get over the fear of collaboration, the fear of the unknown that I struggle with so often, the poison of what I think a failure would be. I knew I needed to push myself. And... I made it. With an image I will cherish forever.

Location
This photo was taken at my local park, one of my favorite locations. Old trees, twisted and tall through age, look down upon fields of grass and crooked fences along winding lanes. I think the reason I like it so much is that it feels so ancient, so timeless.Time
It was early in the morning, the sun was just peaking over the tree tops and pooling about in patches of grass. The soft breeze washed over the hills to tickle our skin as we scurried about in the new days light.Lighting
The light you see from the lantern was all done in Photoshop. Flinging around a lit lantern in drought stricken California was not something I wanted to risk, so it gave me an opportunity to practice making artificial light in post processing.Equipment
I used a Canon 70D, mounted on a tripod, with a 30mm Sigma lens. Also, I used a stool to balance my friend and a sister to fling fabric around and hand model for me.Inspiration
So many things I see in this photo, so many different metaphors and insights. But I think the thing that shines through the most, is that fear can indeed blind us, even drag us down off the task we are given. We hold a light, we feel it, it shines in a dark world, yet if we choose the blindness of fear, then we succumbed to imbalance. Sometimes I feel it, the fear creeping in, dimming my eyes from my purpose, pulling me away from my duty. Sometimes it is all we can do to rip off the blindfold, sometimes it's all we can do to simply trust God in everything, and truly, it is only Him who can take the blindfold away from us.Editing
The dress needed to be reconstructed, the blindfold needed major surgery, light sources had to be established, and the lantern needed to be aflame. In my camera bag
I normally have my Canon 70D, with a Canon 50mm 1.4 and a Sigma 30mm 1.4.Feedback
I suppose my greatest advise for making a photo like this is that everything may not work out, and that's okay. Sometimes the greatest victory is trying, and learning from what didn't work, and then trying again. But keep in mind the light and angle, that they are consistent. This will make compositing later in Photoshop a much easier process. No mater what, don't stop trying to create from your imagination, and if you fail, let your failures live, not to tear you down, but to encourage you to keep trying. They are, after all, our greatest lessons. And never ever give up.
