Behind The Lens

Location

I needed an image for business. I am owner of a mergers and acquisitions business and we needed some images to illustrate some articles we wanted to publish

Time

Well that depends on what aprt of the image. The businessman in the suit is an image I took of myself in my studio. The sign was taken on a country lane near to where I live in Hertfordshire. The background was taken in egypt in July in the afternoon. The sky I don’t remember where I took that but some of the sky was from the original Egypt shot.

Lighting

I made sure that the lighting I used in the studio was appropriate for the background.

Equipment

Canon 5D and 24-105mm Canon lens. Studio lighting was studio flash using a small softbox.

Inspiration

I enjoy surreal art and had been looking at some surreal images from some well known surrealist artists like Dali and Max Ernst. I also found a number of surreal advertising images that had been used starting in the 1950’s.

Editing

I used a number of layers to bring this composite together using Photoshop. I then brought the image togetehr with some image toning and a subtle amount of grain that also pumped up the contrast slightly.

In my camera bag

Depends on the work I am planning. I now use a Canon 5DSr and have a wide range of lenses from 11m to 400mm with a couple of extenders a 1.4X and the 2.0X MK III. When wondering round a town or city doing what I call “stumbleton” photography (seeing what I stumble upon) I typically have my 24-105mm telephoto since it is so versatile.

Feedback

I strongly recpommend when cerating a composite image to sketch the image first of all so you can really think it through. Think about the lens you will use and the angle and perspective you want for each element within the frame. Typically I would use exactly the same focal length image to capture all the elements in the image. The other important element as in most images is to be aware of the light. Not just its direction but quality and intensity. All elements should be able to composite into the scene and if they have very different lighting then this can be much harder to acheive a overall image that looks right. Mark Edwards
