The Alexandra Bridge plays an important role in the history of both my home province of BC and my personal life. The original bridge was built for the BC gold rush in the mid-1800s at a key crossing point of the Fraser River, about 21 north of the town of Yale. It was replaced in 1926 by the structure pictured above, which was in use until the early 1960s, when the new Trans Canada Hwy took a different route about a km to the south. Like many others, it was the 1926 bridge that my grandparents crossed in the 1930s as they made their way to British Columbia from Sasakatchewan.
