Behind The Lens

Location

This photo was taken outside at the patio on a bright but not sunny day.

Time

As a photographer you have these creative moments when you look at something and all of the sudden you have this great idea for a photo. On an early afternoon on a bright but not really sunny day I had one of these moments, the vision to create this shot.

Lighting

I noticed a very soft light on the petals of a yellow flower. I grabbed my camera and took some shots but felt like something is missing. I changed plan and lens, switched to macro and added some water drops to the scene. The cloudy sky gave me exact the light i wanted. More light would have caused ugly white spots in the reflections.

Equipment

As usual I shot with my Nikon D7000 and used macro extension rings on my 18 - 200mm Nikkor lens. Since there was enough natural light on the flower head I didn't need any other additional light source.

Inspiration

There is a lot creativity in macro shots in general. But flowers with beautiful colors and the right light on it inspire me always to take a "closer look". The fascinating thing for me is the softness I achieve in photos like this one, it underlines the beauty of the subject.

Editing

There was no extensive post-processing done on this shot, except corrected the white balance and played with the contrast.

In my camera bag

My photo bag is generally heavy because I like to have everything with me what I might need - My Nikon, flash, lens 80 - 200mm, converter, extension rings, different filter and my tripod.

Feedback

Macro photography has a lot to do with being creative and having patience.
