Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at the Chinocup Nature Reserve where there are several dry salt lakes.

Time

This was about 2 pm. It was the hottest part of the day and 45 degrees celsius. I, fortunately, had my car nearby with the air conditioning running, but my wife thought I was crazy.

Lighting

The big thing I work on when shooting any subject is composition. In many cases, I will take the same photos in many different compositions to review on my return home. In this way, I have learnt what looks good.

Equipment

Nikon D600 full sensor camera with a Tamron 18-300 lens.

Inspiration

We have such large spaces in Australia, and this shows what it looks and feels like. I like the old fence posts as they tell a bigger story. Images need to have a story that they are trying to convey.

Editing

I will take all my photos into Lightroom Classic. Its a solid application and gives many attributes to tune any photo and will make a difference in most cases.

In my camera bag

I have learnt over the years that I bring everything. I have a pelican case designed to carry all my kits—lenses, tripod, cleaning gear, spare batteries, etc. You never know what you will find.

Feedback

It is all about being in the right place at the right time: plan, time, location and weather. But at the end of the day, a lot of it is the luck of the draw.
