Behind The Lens

Location

My first ever trip up the West Coast of California. My first time ever really seeing a real working light tower on the coast.

Time

Seriously, this was one of many stops along the coastal drive. Mid-day, natural light, no clouds in the sky. It was just standing there so majestic. Being from the midwest and not traveling any coastlines in my entire life, I was awe-struck.

Lighting

This was a beautiful trip heading South up the Coast on State Route 1 as a passenger. Any and all images that I wanted to take, I needed my husband to find a spot to pull over so I could get out of the car. The blue-clear sky made for a great backdrop to enhance the colors of the light tower.

Equipment

I was still quite an amateur and new photography student. I didn't have a tripod or any special equipment besides my Canon 50D. I usually shoot in Priority but I like to move the focal point around and shoot. I'm sure I shot this one with everything in the all in-focus red squares.

Inspiration

The fact that I had only seen light towers on television, movies and in pictures I wanted one I could take. My sister-in-law collected light towers of any kind and I thought about a print of this someday for a gift.

Editing

I did not post-processing. I had taken a seminar by a famous photographer who came to one of my photography classes at my local community college. He impressed upon us to get the shot right from the camera the first time. Take the time to set up the composition, lighting and get that image as it was. He impressed upon us newer students that would be so much more rewarding than spending hours in editing. So that's what I did.

In my camera bag

On this particular vacation in a very small vehicle my husband and I both just brought our cameras. At that time I only had the one lens that came with the camera I ordered online.

Feedback

Take your time, set up your camera and be sure the viewfinder is calibrated to your vision and and take your shot. Be confident but be sure to take several images to get the best image. Don't let your nerves get to you, you can adjust the settings and focal points. Have fun is the most important part for me. Winning this is so surprising and rewarding as I feel I will always just be a student of photography and an always practicing.
