This was an early afternoon shoot, which allowed time for the model to have a leisurely morning, arriving refreshed and ready to workLighting
I wanted to create this blackout, sharp relief effect. To do this I used two light boxes, the one on my left was set to a low power just to soften the shadows a little and create some features in the dark side, with the right box on a higher setting. The lights pointed more forward, and the model was standing at the back o the lit area to help create the velvety blackness behind.Equipment
Shot using a Canon 70D, Sigma 25 - 75mm lens, and remote flash triggers.Inspiration

Yes, used Photoshop to take out stance guides (my lens cap!) and some detail in the background, with curves and seperations used as standard in my portraiture shooting.In my camera bag
I always have my trusty portrait lens, a small pancake prime that lets me shoot to f1.4, a mini tripod batteries, cards and cloths to keep the lens clean. I also, for studios work, have a laptop and USB extension so I can shoot tethered which allows me and the model to get immediate feedback and tweak the shot whilst we are still ‘in the moment’.Feedback
Don’t be afraid! try all combination of lights to find the one that works, the trick here is to place the subject right on the limit of the light to create the blackness. After that, do find an experienced model who is happy to work with you (especially if you are new to model shoots) and likes the concept - you will find they are often the creators!
