Behind The Lens

Location

This picture was taken at Lackawanna State Park, Pennsylvania. It's a nice park with campsites, playgrounds, and nature trails. While it does have some more commercial aspects to it, such as the pool or food stands, it has some of the most beautiful natural areas within the park.

Time

It was about 1 PM when this picture was taken. It was the end of August, Labor Day weekend I believe, so it was still pretty hot out. The leaves were still vividly green and the wildlife was still very active, a great weekend for pictures.

Lighting

I really loved the way the tree casts shadows of its leaves onto my sisters, it gives the picture and selective color aspects some depth. If there was no shading on the subjects, it'd be just a solid color. The shadowing makes for a more interesting picture.

Equipment

For the picture a PENTAX Optio WG-2 camera was used. No extraneous equipment was involved in this picture, including flash, tripods, or extra lenses.

Inspiration

It was difficult getting my sisters to pose for other pictures, since it was very hot out. Eventually, they got bored of being my models and left to go sit by the lake. That's how this picture came to be, they didn't even realize the perfect photo opportunity they gave me until after I finished editing.

Editing

I just used a color history tool. I don't have access to Photoshop anymore, but I have two or three online programs I use in combination to get exactly what I'm looking for. I didn't adjust anything else, besides making my sisters the only colored part of the picture.

In my camera bag

I don't have a photography bag yet, but I do have a list of equipment I'd love to get. I'm looking at a telescopic lens, a better tripod, maybe even a better cleaning kit. I'm also looking at buying the PENTAX KS1 DSLR camera, since I've been using a lower grade camera for everything.

Feedback

Sometimes it's when no one is posing that the best pictures reveal themselves. It's the candid shots, the "in the moment" pictures that really speak volumes to its audience, it instills a very specific feeling or extracts a certain reaction. I believe that it's crucial to attempt to impact someone with just an image, to leave them thinking about it after seeing it.
