Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo on the back training areas of Fort Campbell, Kentucky. Taking such an image is a little tricky to ensure there are no captures of any type of military presence in any sense even though I was in the Army at this time.

Time

This was taken during a fun but very muggy night. The humidity was a battle for my camera lens later on in the early morning hours. I took this on August 31st, of 2014 and it was close to 11pm central time.

Lighting

I can not think of anything special about lighting throughout the image. This particular location is really a hit or miss with the light pollution, and on humid nights I consider myself lucky if I can even reach 2000 ISO before over exposing due to the light pollution. I adjusted for the most optimal of my current conditions and made the best of the situation.

Equipment

I used the Canon 6D, paired with the Rokinon 24 f/1.4 lens (love that lens very much too), a Manfrotto tripod and the Canon TC-803N timer/remote controller.

Inspiration

This image turned out to be a freak accident waiting to happen. A good friend and I actually went to this location to explore with his telescope while I had a composition 180 degrees behind me already set up for a 90 minute star trail image. I had started the star trail image and we started talking and I was perfectly behind him as he was making his adjustments. I thought to myself that it would make an interesting photo so I stopped my star trail image and turned and refocused on him then started taking a few shots. Then the idea hit me to do a selfie (I do not like doing selfies or am big into my own picture to be taken) doing what I love to do, exploring the vast expanses beyond our own reach while reflecting how minuscule we really are. After playing around with this unique idea, I continued on with my star trail image as we explored the universe around us for the next few hours.

Editing

Post process was a simple edit. I did not want to do anything extreme and keep the image as I was seeing it when my friend was making his adjustments. I simply corrected a WB to my taste, and flatten the image within LR then took it into PS to make a few minor adjustments to bring out the Milkyway.

In my camera bag

This is a loaded question! I have a few bags full of equipment and a small bag that I carry for when I do go on an adventure. I normally figure out the intent of my shoot and determine what equipment to take with me while taking as little as possible to reduce weight and to force me to find something with the limits in which I carry.

Feedback

Keep shooting and experimenting! It all starts with a vision and an idea, many times they reveal themselves in the moment. If you do try to do something similar and do it in one shot, holding still can be a little tricky when you're thinking about it.
