Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at Grand Rivers, Kentucky at the Lighthouse Landing Marina.

Time

This was taken during a pleasant evening walk. A friend and I were looking around for interesting subjects to photograph, and we both already knew we were heading to the little lighthouse but wanted to explore more to find other areas of interest that are often overlooked. The sun was a little high for our liking and decided to grab a bite to eat at a local burger joint that was amazing and gave the sun a little more time to close in on the horizon. I shot this at 6:41pm on May 23, 2015.

Lighting

I was still learning quite a bit at this time (well truthfully that never ends) and noticed the sun obscured behind the clouds. I felt that it was my opportunity to take a shot and not have to worry about so much of the highlights being blown and still get a great exposure.

Equipment

I used the Canon 6D with a 24-105mm f/4 lens and nothing else.

Inspiration

I visited this location once before and was kicking myself for not having my camera with me and I carry it everywhere I go now even if I don't pull it out. My friend Clay and I noticed some other photographers were on the dock taking shots when we had arrived. I knew I was going to get a shot but it put me in a dilemma that I did not account for. I found myself suddenly thinking "how am I going to take a shot different than the last person? Or even previous photographers?". I had no tripod and took a few handheld shots when I thought to use the railing to help stabilize the camera. When I saw the result I was very pleased and I had something a little different than the normal.

Editing

When I first processed this, I was really unsure of what I was going for. In fact, I processed this in color and it came out beautiful but felt as it was missing something that I could not put my finger on. It was at least a half year later that I came back to this shot and I had an idea in mind with my then new found knowledge. I wanted those lines to stand out and the angle made it perfect for me. I went a little heavy on the b/w conversion and lowered the exposure with the intent to bring back exposure using a couple of radial filters in selective areas. A heavy vignette to compliment the feel of the overall image.

In my camera bag

I photograph accordingly to my moods so there is no telling what will be in my bag as far as lens go. I normally have my kit lens Canon 24-105 f/4. I can have my Tamron 90 1:1 macro lens as my main as I love macro and it also doubles as my portrait lens. For astrophotography I carry the amazing Rokinon f/1.4 manual lens. For wildlife, I will either carry the Tamron 70-300, or the Tamron 150-600mm. I always carry a polarizer, a 3,6, and 10 stop ND screw ons and step ring adapters to fit whatever lens I go with. Remote timer release, headlamp, extra batteries, multitool, and a few rolls of tape and sometimes the 600ex speedlite.

Feedback

There are times you will have to visit a location multiple times to get the image you are after. Truthfully, this particular image was not the light I had in mind. It was about 8 months later (after an hour trip there and an hour back and multiple attempts) I finally got the image from this location that I was seeking. Even if you find that you do not get what you are after, keep shooting and exploring the light. Take time and study different angles, different times, and how the light affects your surrounding location no matter the struggles or frustrations you may encounter, the reward will be personal and extremely satisfying.
