Location
This photo was taken dangling from a helicopter with no doors flying over downtown Manhattan in front of the Freedom Tower looking North at the city in the distance. We were flying about 100 mph so it was a challenge keeping my camera steady. It was literally a natural high!Time
I scheduled this flight to happen as the sun was setting over the city in Mid June so it was about 7:45 PM. It was very hot and humid that day with the threat of a thunder storm which would have cancelled the flight. Luckily, the rain held off for a few more hours. The sky was not as dramatic as I had hoped but there were some clouds to give it the depth I wanted.Lighting
The quality of light and colors as the sun sets with the city as a bakckdrop has always been visually striking to me. Thus, nothing but good natural light is what I was looking for. Mother Nature cooperated and gave me some pink to work with.Equipment
This was shot on a Nikon D300 with Nikon 18-200mm lens with no other equipment.Inspiration
I am an architect and seeing things from above in my mind comes natural to me. Being a lifetime resident of NYC I've experienced the city from underground, street level and from tall buildings but never from above. This was a dream come true and I wanted to capture any image that would show the beauty, density and grandeur of the city I so dearly love. I think I got close with this one shot.Editing
The sky needed to pop some more so I post processed in Lightroom and lightened some of the foreground. In my camera bag
I like to travel light so I keep my camera bag the same. Nikon D300 and my 18-200 mm lens which gives me a lot of flexibility when photographing stills and architecture. I also carry a Nikon 12-24 wide angle which I use for landscapes.Feedback
I am not a professional photographer and my technical skills are limited so I did some online research as to recommended camera settings. That was very helpful. If possible I would suggest a test run because the first time will be a shocker and will take your breath away so trying to focus on getting a photo can be tough. Depth, perspective and scale were important to me which is why I chose this point of view and threw in my sneakers!
