This photo was taken at the Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines, Iowa. It was our first trip to this zoo and trying out some new equipment.Time
This photo was taken on May 21, 2006 with my first real digital SLR, a Canon Rebel XT. It was later in the afternoon and was a partly cloudly day.Lighting
This photo was very difficult to grab as the view window that this guy was pacing back and forth near, was a small 2ft square 1 inch thick piece of tinted glass with a lot of scratches and paw prints on the inside. The cloudy skies gave a mysterious look to his eyes though.Equipment
I used my first DSLR to capture this, which was a Canon Rebel XT, a Tamron 100-500mm Telephoto extended to 500mm at 400ISO f6.3 with a 1/250 shutter. Taken through 1" plate glassInspiration
I really wanted to get a photo of this guy, but he would constantly pace back and forth and never stand still. He was a ways away from the glass , so I sat quiet until finally it was very quiet and he stopped for just a split second to look at me.Editing
Very minimal post processing. Mostly a bit of sharpening and some color correction to get rid of the tint from the plate glass. In my camera bag
I carry very different gear than I used to , but still carry a telephoto when I go to the zoo. Right now I carry my Canon RP with a EOS RP RF 24-105mm F4 L IS USM and a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5-5.6L IS II USM Lens. I have several other lenses that are wider and have macros and many others, but they usually stay in the case unless I have a specific purpose for them. I carry the camera and one lens in a waist pack so we can be very mobile.Feedback
Your local zoo has a lot of great shots that can be taken to look like they were done in the wild. I also found that putting a telephoto within 1 foot of a chain link fence in most cases will make the fence almost invisible in the photos if you are on the long end of the lens.
