Location
the photo was taken in Cambodia. we were on a small isle and walking around we found a seemingly abandoned temple of which this man seemed to be the guardian.Time
we wake up around six AM and after a long run by boat we reached the isle in mid morning under a really harsh sun.Lighting
it was about noon when I took the photo, usually not a good time for a nice light, but the man sat under the trees at the entrance of the temple and there the light was nicely smooth and diffused.Equipment
the photo was shot with a nikon d800E and 24-120 f4.Inspiration
The man. He was there alone listening music,I think, from a small portable radio but when he saw us he took away the radio and begins to smile. He was really very happy to see someone to talk to and didn't ask for money or anything else.Editing
I usually shot raw. For the simple conversion I used silver efex pro and for the rest and most important part of the work I followed the directions of a tutorial from Paul ApalkinIn my camera bag
I always take my Leica SL with 24-90. till last year I carried two nikon FF bodies and four lenses,a very heavy backpack if you walk the whole day,but the 90%,sometimes more, of my photos were shot with a body and one lens, the 24-120 f4. So when the SL came out I sold all my nikon equipment, and I took the SL. I also bring a Leica M240 with some m lenses that I can use with the SL too.Feedback
try to establish a dialogue with people you meet, don't "shoot" them from a distance, don't be a hunter.Only with a real interest in people and in their story it can be possible to have moments in which they will be relaxed and natural and then will be possible to take the portrait you wanted to.
