Behind The Lens

Location

I'm a member of the local photographic society and on occasion throughout the season we will have a 'studio' session in the evening. We invite some models and stylists to come for the evening and it's a great opportunity to photograph the models in a studio environment. It's a great evening as with so many creatives in the room, lots of ideas get bounced around and there is plenty of help should you need it.

Time

Our club meet on a Monday evening for a couple of hours each week which is a great way of getting around the Monday blues!

Lighting

I wanted to have a vintage Hollywood look to the image and used three lights in the setup to try and achieve this. Two on the model, and one on the background. After I had taken a couple of shots, I was unhappy with the background as it was just to plain! We had a table in the room with lots of bits and pieces brought in by members where there was a cat litter tray poop scoop! Asking someone to hold this in front of the background light I managed to use this to create the 'Venetian' blind effect on the background which I though was very effective!

Equipment

I shot this with my old Sony A77 DSLT camera with the 16-50 kit lens attached at 28mm 2.8 1/320 of a second. Not the usual settings you would expect for a studio session perhaps but it was all about experimentation! It was a three light setup with a plain background.

Inspiration

I was going for that vintage style look when I was setting up the image, and when I asked the model to use the old style telephone it immediately made me think of those vintage humorous birthday cards you get in the supermarket which I love. I have another version of this image with the caption at the bottom 'Betty's friends were concerned about her overuse of the 118 service, but she thought they were just marvellous!'

Editing

I used Lightroom to process the image to convert it to black and white and to boost the contrast. I added a bit of grain to get a bit of a film noir look about the whole thing. I quite like a striking image and find I tend to boost contrast to make an image stand out. It's not to everyone's taste of course but I find it pleasing. It's so easy to overdo it though.

In my camera bag

I've since upgraded my camera from my trusty Sony A77 and now I use a Sony A7ii and I'm totally in love with this camera! It's usually got its kit 28-70mm lens attached to it and I usually carry with me my 50mm 1.7 nifty 50. I have a sigma 70-300 telephoto lens, but only usually take that out with me if I really think I'll need it. I like to travel light! I also have some old vintage lenses but I only take those out if I want to specifically use them. They are amazing fun though.

Feedback

Be creative and inventive! I love it when you have an idea in your head but are unsure as to how to do it. Don't be afraid to try different things and using everyday objects that you might not think have any place on your shoot! Who would have thought a poop-a-scoop would have been so useful as a light modifier! Bounce ideas off of the people around you and talk about what your trying to do. it can be surprising what people come up with.
