I went on a photography trip for the weekend with my local Photography club up to the Norfolk coast in England, On our last day, the weather had turned horribly so we decided to head to Cromer for a spot of lunch before the drive back home to Hertfordshire. This is Cromer Pier on the seafront in less than ideal weather conditions!Time
This was taken post-lunch on the way back to the car! I'd been up since about 5am shooting the sunrise over at Wells-next-to-sea and ready to head home and get my head down, but I couldn't resist stopping to photograph the pier as it was getting battered by the sea.Lighting
It had been a really nice start to the day and when the weather changed it seemed to happen rather quickly! hence the blue sky's and broken cloud.Equipment
I took this photo on my iPhone! I had left all my camera gear locked away in the car as I had decided it was highly unlikely I'd be taking any photographs because of the horrible weather! I took a few images on my phone as I really wanted to catch a wave crashing over the side.Inspiration
The combination of blue sky's and terrible driving rain and rough seas caught my eye as I was heading back to the car... The wind was really whipping around and it was hard to stand still! not to mention the sting of the rain being pounded into your face! It wasn't pleasant at all!Editing
To be fair, the image straight out of the camera was a little dull if I'm honest, but what with the 'live' photo feature on the iPhone, I opted for the long exposure which made the image much more dynamic. Then, again as it was on my phone, I used Snapseed to edit the levels which really made the image pop. This has been one of my most successful images this year!In my camera bag
I always have my iPhone with me of course, and as they say, the best camera is the one you have on you, but my goto camera is my trusted Sony A7ii. I LOVE this camera! (cue the haters here......) I'm a Sony guy anyway and have previously used the a200, a77 and now the a7ii. I usually only carry two lenses, the kit lens and my nifty fifty. I like to travel light so try to keep my kit to a minimum where possible.Feedback
If you wanting to capture something similar, then the bad weather will certainly help! But don't worry, here in Blighty you shouldn't have to wait long! (whilst typing this we're in the middle of a heatwave) Keep your eyes open and shoot shoot shoot! you never know when something will present itself and jump out at you! The biggest thing I can take from this particular shot is that I took it using my phone... I'm so pleased about that as it's thrilling when people turn in shock. camera's are awesome. Happy shooting!
