Behind The Lens

Location

I took this on board a replica of an old sailing ship that had come to Annapolis, Maryland. The ship is used to teach volunteers about sailing using "old" methods.

Time

I don't remember the specific time, but it was afternoon.

Lighting

It was just daylight

Equipment

Nikon d7100 and a Tamron zoom lens

Inspiration

I was really admiring the various parts of the ship, and heard the flag flapping. when I looked up, I was intrigued by the angles of all the ropes and the ladder. I could imaging the flag steaming behind the ship as it sailed, instead of being "among" the ropes.

Editing

I did some cropping, and adjusted levels only.

In my camera bag

I usually have the D7100, this Tamron 18-270, and often 2 prime lens, Nikon 35mm and 50 mm. If I expect to be needing light, I'll add an SB900 and either small foldable soft boxes or a flash bender. If I only expect outdoor and some fill flash, I substitute a SB-400.

Feedback

I think it's great to see a big object (like the ship) but to focus on seeing the details. Other shots I did that day included coils of ropes on the deck, the polished handrails, and the planking. I took the time to talk to some of the volunteers, and asked what they liked the most, which gave me some ideas of photos I probably wouldn't have noticed. for example, someone pointing out how they were learning to splice rope had me looking for splices.
