Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken outside of my friend’s apartment in Long Beach, California. The sun was setting just right, creating a glow that hit the wall just right. I would always see this view as I was leaving. Then one day, I just had to capture the moment.

Time

I remember that this was taken at around 6 pm or so, summer time. As I was about to leave, I happened to see this view and quickly grabbed my camera.

Lighting

I wanted the color out of the image because for me it wasn’t about the color that I was seeing but rather the lighting. The mixture of shadows and highlights that were naturally created was magical. I love natural lighting, everything feels more vibrant. Even though the color is removed, you can almost see it still.

Equipment

Used my Panasonic LUMIX GH3 for this. No flash or tripod, handheld. I don’t remember the ISO or shutter speed but I did use a 25mm Voightlander Prime Lens with a 1.4f stop. I was probably around f5.6 maybe a little bit higher.

Inspiration

I loved the lighting, the perspective, and placement of the window in the hallway. The decor of the building was able to give a small glimpse into how old the place is. The moment felt timeless, and the lighting always look beautiful during this time of day.

Editing

I removed the color from this image. The sunset was creating this awesome orange glow inside the hallway but realized that the color and light distracted from the rest of the image. I wanted the eye to wander from all areas of The image rather than focus on a specific spot. The removing of color allows the eye to graze the image.

In my camera bag

I normally carry my 25mm Voightlander prime lens, 14mm wide angle lens (Rokinon), a tripod, a couple ND filters, and my LUMIX GH3. I tend to travel light because I like to move around and not feel encumbered by my gear or bulky backpack.

Feedback

Don’t always look at the world with color - mess around with your image and play with it. Removing color allows the eyes to wander the image more and soak in the details piece by piece. Sometimes color can be distracting.
