Behind The Lens

Location

This is a photo that I took in studio around 2000. I think it was one taken with Illford B/W film of a college dancer that agreed to model for me.

Time

I believe this photo was taken in late afternoon, but since it is studio lighting that really doesn't affect the image.

Lighting

The lighting I had at the time was a couple of older photogenic parabolic lights with frosted cover and barn doors and one a boom stand for overhead. Two were placed on each side of the model. The boom light was used for overhead and hair lighting. Then a background light was used behind the objects on the background.

Equipment

Canon EOS 10 and Mamiya 645. Tripod, Two Photogenic parabolic and Photogenic background liight.

Inspiration

The love for shooting the elegant lines and grace of dance combined with the form and movement of the dancer.

Editing

I did digitize the originals, cleaned up dust, made minor adjustments and placed black border on the outside

In my camera bag

I currently photograph with a Canon 5D Mark lll and the original Canon 5D. I use a Canon 75-350 /4-5.6 L lens, Canon 70-200/ 2.8 L lens, Canon 28-105/ 5.6 and Sigma 18mm lens. Manfrotto tripod, Canon flashes, pocket wizards, ;

Feedback

I put objects under the background on the floor the create a more interesting landscape and symmetry. Lighting from the sides helps define the figure and form of the dancer. High speed sync or faster sync shutter speed is helpful when the dancer is movement.
