Location
As a special project I did a series with Colorado College dancers. We would often go up to Garden of the Gods in Colorado Springs in the middle of April, early in the morning as the sun was coming up. Needless to say it was often quite chilly, but these ladies were real troopers and worked with me to capture some great material. This young lady was amazing and had an incredible work ethic. Much of the credit for these dynamic images has to go to them.Time
This was photographed around 7:00 to 8:30 in the morning in mid-April.Lighting
This particular morning we happened to have some interesting cloud formations. I tried a technique In PS with this image of making duplicate copies of the layer and offsetting them just slightly to give them a 3D type of appearance, then masking out the dancer I place a duplicate of just her and the rock so she was stationary and more pronounced in the image. She was then converted from color to BW.Equipment
This series was done back in 2004 with a Canon EOS-1D. Back in the day it was only about 4 megapixels. I was using a 28mm-105mm 5.6 L lens. sky light filter. That morning my setting were ISO 200, aperture was 10 and shutter speed 1/400. I wasn't using a tripod, just hand held and no flash.Inspiration
Dancers had become a great source of inspiration to me and one of my favorite subjects to photograph. I love their grace, beautiful lines and magnificent form. Putting that combination together with great landscapes from the Garden of the Gods just seemed like a winning formula.Editing

Typically I will carry Canon 5D Mark lll, with either a 35-300 5.6 Canon L lens or the Canon 70-200 2.8 L lens. I will a Canon 580EX flash, off camera cord, off camera transmitter and receiver, extra batteries, Sandisk compact flash cards, misc filters and accessories. Manfrotto tripod.Feedback
Plan your excursion well. Assistants are helpful. Take good care of your models. Prepare for the unexpected. Have permission and permits if necessary. Have fun, but be careful!
