This photo was taken at a local park in Southern New Jersey. This is my secret place in the park that I bring families to get great sunset shots.Time
This capture was taken around sundown in early June. Was a sweltering/breeze-less day, but the sky was like a giant softbox Somehow the sun peaked through the clouds at the right moment.Lighting
I wanted to use as much natural light as possible from the sun in the background, but I definitely needed some fill light, so I used my external speedlight to fill in the shadows.Equipment
I just used my Nikon D300, my nikkor 35mm (f/2.8) lens, and my Yongnuo YN-568EX TTL Flash Speedlite. That is all the equipment I used.Inspiration
I love doing candid family shots, and David’s daddy (shown in picture) kept throwing him up in the air and then kissing him on his cute little cheeks. I couldn’t miss that moment. I love capturing the love between parents and their children. It is such a beautiful indescribable feeling that you have for your children, but I feel you can be lucky enough to capture it through photos.Editing
I definitely do some post-processing. I use a bunch of actions that I have developed over the years. Some sharpening, color enhancing, etc.In my camera bag
I ALWAYS have my 50mm (f/1.8), 35mm (f/1.8), and 24-70mm (f/2.8). I also have an ultra wide-angle lens 11-16mm, 2.8. I find that I use the 35 for kids, and my 50 and 24-70 more for families. I also have to my speed light. I use the Yongnuo 565-EX. Definitely necessary to fill in light.Feedback
My advice is to shoot at sunset or sunrise, and try not to so so many poses. Let the families act natural, and capture away. I love being in that moment with a family...makes it feel more natural.
