Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken in my backyard in Grand Haven, Michigan.

Time

It was taken in the early evening shortly before dusk. This is my preferred time of day to shoot, because I love the light. It makes the colors vivid & the backgrounds soft.

Lighting

In my view, it's always ALL about the lighting. It's what I see first and capturing it is how I approach the shot.

Equipment

I shoot with a Canon 60D and an 18-135mm lens. And I shoot everything in natural light, because as I said, for me it's always all-about-the-light.

Inspiration

As someone who's been taking photos for 40 years, it's second nature for me to see the world through a camera lens. So when I walked into my yard, this shot literally jumped-out at me because of the beautiful way the leaf was illuminated. It was a no-brainer :)

Editing

Lightroom is my playroom. It allows me to bring an impressionistic quality to my work. I consider myself an artist whose medium is photography. Creating images that are interesting & invoke a sense of magic & wonder is my objective, because that's what the natural world invokes in me. I find that my impression of things can be more beautiful that the reality. That's what I do in Lightroom.

In my camera bag

My camera & a usually a spare battery. The technical aspect of photography has never held my interest, probably because I'm a hard-wired right brain person. For me it's all about finding joy in the creative process. So I've taught myself how to do that without getting bogged down in all the technical details.

Feedback

I realize that my approach to photography differs from the "norm." So my advice would be to see things through the eyes of a painter. Start 1st with how the light plays on the subject, then think about the composition, color, contrast & background. Like any other creative endeavor, when the end result comes from your heart & soul, it's not only personally satisfying, it usually produces something that is authentic & has an original point of view.
