Location
The Wharf Street Pub and grill has an amazing history. The building was used a trading post for ships traveling from Europe to the East. The basement where this photo was taken is also the wine cellar these days and has a big tunnel under the river that used to store the rain water that the ships again took on board. The basement is a rustic pub with a fantastic atmosphere and all the wood, stone and barrels lends for an awesome photographic scene. It dates back to the early 1800's. They also serve the best Steak and Chips in town and with the local brewery next door they always have a fresh supply of Kowie Gold.Time
Middle of the day, time was irrelevant as we were inside a building.Lighting
I mostly shoot with a 300w battery powered little studio light with a softbox. One single light is all I use 95% of the time I use a light.Equipment
Canon 5dM2, Canon 24-70 F2.8, 300w Battery Flash on stand.Inspiration
We were shooting a theme that day and Kaylene managed to get hold of a lot of vintage/ cabaret dresses for the event. We wanted to show a classy woman from the early part of the previous century in typical pub and restaurant setting.Editing
I did the usual skin cleansing and a bit of smoothing, not much needed as Kaylene has an excellent and healthy skin. I tweaked the levels a bit and applied a soft filter action to give it a bit of softness and elegance as well as 'glow'. Probably a bit of dodging and burning too.In my camera bag
These days I am a Fuji man as the equipment is much lighter and cheaper compared to big DSLR's and for the type of shooting I do they are more suited and give better results - the first thing you notice when you import a Fuji file into Photoshop is that the histogram is full from left to right. I mostly shoot JPG these days. Fuji XT-1 Fuji 52mm F1.2 - my favourite lens, this lens is so sharp and user-friendly. I absolutely love this lens Fuji 55-200mm Fuji kit lens Rokinon 12mm F2 lens - my wide angle lens, little gem B+W ND filters and Polarizer Filter - Wish I could afford Lee Filters Remote release cable Cleaning Kit Extra Memory Battery Grip Model Release Forms On the other Side of the Bag I have a Canon HD Video Camera Manfrotto Tripod is in its own bag and almost permanently in the carFeedback
Find a good model that is willing and able to pose and move as you want her to. This was the third shoot I did with Kaylene and we already had a good understanding. Do not be afraid to take, retake and retake the shot until you get what you want. That is why I like working with models, if I don't get it the first time I will try until I get the desired outcome. Take your time, relax. Have fun! Laugh a lot! Invest in good glass, before upgrading your camera body, rather buy that special piece of glass that will make the world of difference. I am pedantic over sharpness. Get off camera lighting and triggers, they make the world of difference. I would love to own the big Profoto lights but can't justify owning them at this stage so I use a cheaper light set. Arrange your location in advance so you do not have other people getting in the way. Get a lighting assistant. Drink a good South African Red Wine :)
