Behind The Lens

Location

I often travel locally to historical spots, and this one is no exception. Living in New Jersey we have a wealth of such locations, especially those connected to the American Revolution. This shot was taken looking down the Delaware and Raritan Canal in Washington Crossing State Park. The park commemorates the famous crossing of the Delaware at Christmastime when Washington surprised and defeated the Hessian soldiers.

Time

The shot was taken in late November of last year (2015). It was around midday and the sun was out, producing the beautiful reflections in the canal.

Lighting

It was an outdoor shot on a sunny day, so I took a couple of shots around the same time. This was my favorite of the group. I used Daylight White Balance on the camera.

Equipment

I used a Canon T3i with the 18-135 kit lens. I normally shoot on Manual, and my settings were 1/125 at f5.6.

Inspiration

A beautiful day in the fall with a great scenic shot in front of me. I liked including the two people in the shot to make it more "alive".

Editing

I think this was pretty much the way it came out of the camera. I sometimes make slight overall adjustments in Lightroom (no heavy post processing) but I believe this was as shot.

In my camera bag

I try to travel light and unobtrusive as possible. Normally this means camera with lens and perhaps a polarizing filter. When I take the bag I usually have an additional lens (often the Sigma 105 Macro), as I also like to shoot close up shots. I carry the Canon T3i on a wrist strap, carrying it in one hand.

Feedback

Just keep your eyes open to what's around you. Look for the best location you can get to, and take several shots, varying the exposure. This shot came out much better than I expected. Overall the best advice is "Have fun!"
