Location
This photo was taken on the third stop of a recent Photography Road Trip with my son Mitch. Each year we try and meet up and get away for a few weeks to enjoy our shared loves of camping, hiking, photography and banana bread! On this trip we headed south and followed the coast down into Victoria (Australia). This section of our trip was focused on the Great Ocean Road, an awesome section of coastal road that takes in the very rugged coastline, as well as pristine rain forest.Time
We had been in camp for two days when we headed to the main lookout of the Twelve Apostles early to do some exploring and avoid the crowds late in the afternoon. There was no cloud cover so not much chance of a radiant sunset that evening. The Twelve Apostles are just off the coastline that runs east-west, and seem to stand there like sentinels guarding the cliffs. After a bit of exploring I set up my gear around 30 minutes before sunset.Lighting
The large surf swell was steadily and deliberately pounding into the Apostles and cliff face, creating a heavy mist over the ocean. As the sun set lower towards the horizon, the mist was intensifying the golden glow from the sun. No chance of a red sky, however that golden glow was just gorgeous!Equipment
For this shot I had my Canon 70D, a Tamron 24-70mm f/2.8 lens mounted on a tripod.Inspiration
I usually don't need a lot of inspiration to shoot. I enjoy hiking and camping, so it seems natural to try and capture the locations. My view is to shoot no matter what the location or conditions - to try and "see" a shot no matter where I am. Always a good challenge.Editing
This image has had basic processing in Lightroom - highlights and shadows adjusted, a little extra contrast and vibrance, and them some image sharpening. In my camera bag
My son says I carry to much in my bag! I usually have my 70D and the Tamron 25-70mm - it seems to be more and more my "go to" lens. I also take a 50mm f/2.8 and a wide 10-24mm lens. Filters - ND and Polariser. Sometimes I like to try light painting at night, so I always have a good torch and off-camera flash.Feedback
Best advice given to me was to just get out there. Sure, understand the settings of you camera, understand the Exposure Triangle, but get out there and shoot. Try different things. When you first arrive at your location, don't just start snapping away - spend a few minutes taking in all the elements of what you see around you, create the image in your mind first! And don't leave without shooting, always look for something to shoot, no matter how bad, boring or busted the scene may be!
