Location
I took this photo at a place on the Exeter Canal opposite Topsham. It is the old lock keepers cottages at Turf Locks. It is only a ten minute drive from mine and one of my favourite places to go and photograph.Time
This was taken just as the sun was touching the horrizon at sunset, although there are plenty of opportunities to get a good photograph along the canal at almost any time of day.Lighting
Several hours before sunset the sky was filled with cirrus cloud that would have made for a great sky with loads of colour after the sun dipped below the horizon. This was what i was hoping for, but as I got to the location the cloud had all dispersed leaving a plain (boring) sky. I decided to wait around anyway and see what happened. Sure enough some cloud came rolling in, not the type i was after, but I liked the way it was mirrored in the calm water.Equipment
Taken with Nikon D800, nikkor 18-35mm f3.5-4.5, Cokin grad ND8 with a manfrotto 290 tripod.Inspiration
As i have said previously, this location is a favourite of mine. I have seen many great images of this place and love how each photographer will shoot it a different way.Editing
Post processing in Photoshop cc, slight enhancement of colours and a tweek to levels and contrast. In my camera bag
Depends what I am out shooting, but if i am shooting landscapes then i will use my D800 with Nikkor 18-35mm f3.5-4.5 , Tamron 15-30mm f2.8, Sigma 70-200mm f2.8. I also use Cokin z series filters.Feedback
The only advice i could give to someone would be to never give up. If you are at a location and the sky looks washed out or boring then just wait a while. In the UK the weather is very unpredictable and a good sky is never a given.
