Behind The Lens

Location

The photo was taken in a basement studio with one major light source

Time

All daylight was blocked off by black sheets

Lighting

Soft box flash was pointed at the whitewashed ceiling to further soften the light. The ceiling is quite low just under 7 feet

Equipment

Nikon d 300 , bowers flash unit with soft box

Inspiration

This is loosely based on a Rembrandt painting . I love how he uses the rich tones and amber light the baroque style of painting. When I met this model she was a living embodiment of a women who posed for the great dutch master

Editing

I warmed the image in photoshop and added a texture layer to distress the image. The water in the image came from shots of a nearby stream

In my camera bag

Camera Nikon d 300 16-85 mm lens and a reflector, minimal equipment minimal fuss . Sometimes I shoot with a Minolta Xd 11 film camera and push process the film to increase the grain pattern

Feedback

Step outside of photography when looking for influences. I'm a classically trained painter and I have taught both painting and art history as well as photography. If you are a portrait photographer look at portrait painters, like my favorites Sir Joshua Reynolds, Henry Raeburn, Gustav Klimnt ,John Singer Sargent and many more. This may be a jumping off point to inspire you to create your own images
