Behind The Lens

Location

At the Range of the Jaguar exhibit at the Jacksonville Zoo & Gardens in Florida. Being a big fan of the Jacksonville Jaguars football team, I took this photo to practice one year and had the players sign it!

Time

Early morning, about 9:30. The zoo opens at 9 and the animals are much more active during this time before it gets too hot.

Lighting

Equipment

This was a handheld shot with a Nikon D5100, and a Nikor 55-300 lens at 260 zoom. I had an ISO 560 at f 5/6.

Inspiration

I was shooting photos of the other jaguars in the area when this one jumped up. He was clearly disturbed about something and came towards the fence snarling and hissing. I kept shooting and backed up as he approached so as to keep him in the frame.

Editing

Just enhanced the color a bit.

In my camera bag

My main lens is the 55-300, but I also carry an 18-55 as well as a Tamron 150-600.

Feedback

Always be ready because you never know when you'll get that next great shot! Also, try not to check your photos on the camera screen until you get home. If you're in the field who knows what will happen while you're checking.
