Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken at the Buffalo Bill Center of the West Museum in Cody, WY. They were having a program on rescued raptors. The birds had been injured in the wild and were not capable of surviving in the wild.

Time

This was in the early afternoon; contrasty highlights.

Lighting

I chose a location so I was in the shade of a building but the presenter and the birds were in the sunlight.

Equipment

Handheld Olympus OM-D M5i. At this time I was transitioning from silver to digital. The camera was digital, but the lens was a Zuiko 200mm F4, a lens from the 25mm system.

Inspiration

The 200mm on a MFT sensor gives the FOV of a 400mm on full frame. So I was looking for an opportunity to put the extra length to a good use. In the original you can zoom in and see a reflection of the crowd in the birds eye.

Editing

Early in the learning of how to post process. There was a lot of dodging and burning to increase the contrast.

In my camera bag

I currently have on Olympus M1iii, three pro zooms from 7-140mm, a longer consumer zoom. Also there are three Zuiko primes, 12, 17 and 25mm and two primes from Lowa, a 7.5mm and a 17mm. After seeing this picture again (it's been several years) I may add another 200mm Zuiko. The 35mm Olympus lenses are sharp and are quite reasonable now.

Feedback

Focus on the EYES.
