Behind The Lens

Location

This was taken atop Bear Fence Mountain in Shanendoah National Park. As I scrambled around looking for the perfect spot to shoot the sunset, I looked back and say my girlfriend already taking it all in. I shot one photo and joined her.

Time

Sunset. We got a late start on the trail and basically had to run the entire way up.

Lighting

You can look at forecasts and cloud level predictions till your eyes bleed, but you never really know what you'll get until you arrive at the location. On this evening it all came together just right.

Equipment

This was shot on a Nikon D7100, with a Tokina 11-16mm 2.8 lens.

Inspiration

This was just such a beautiful moment to me. All the rushing and struggling to get there seemed to wash away as the scene unfolded before our eyes.

Editing

For an image taken at sunset, this actually required minimal post processing. Some highlight and shadow adjustments, with a ND gradient filter over the sky, and it was a wrap.

In my camera bag

I always carry my Nikon D7100 with the Tokina 11-16mm for landscapes, and a Nikon D5300 with a Nikkor 18-200mm zoom for the flexibility and sudden bear sightings.

Feedback

Effort is key. I rarely capture an image I really love simply by walking down my street or pulling off to the side of the road. Most, in my experience, involve hiking (at least one way) in the dark, very early wake ups, or late bedtimes, and always the chance for long periods spent in very hot or cold temperatures. Even still, nothing is guaranteed. I've spent many mornings on mountain summits waiting for clouds to clear, only to come back with nothing but a frozen beard. I still believe all the failed missions make the successful ones that much sweeter.
