Behind The Lens

Location

Near a place called Tingri. This is the main township on the Freedom Highway near the point you turn off to reach Mount Everest Base Camp on the Tibetan side. The mountains in the background include Cho Oyu – at 8,201m the sixth highest in the world and a close neighbour to Mount Everest.

Time

Afternoon.

Lighting

At around 5,000 metres the light is quite harsh, so it’s not so easy to avoid harsh shadows, especially in the time before RAW processing.

Equipment

A Nikon F801S with a 28-70 lens. Details not recorded - it was 25 years ago.

Inspiration

This old Tibetan lady was a gem – so weathered but with such a kindly expression. It really struck me just how much she and her people reflected the hard environment they lived in.

Editing

25 years ago I was shooting mostly Fuji Velvia slide film. So this image resulted from a scan and then some work in Photoshop to bring back some of the detail in the shadows; some sharpening and work on colour saturation.

In my camera bag

I love the mountains, so as little as possible - at present a Nikon D7000 camera body, an 18-85 small zoom and the 55-300 bigger zoom, a spare battery and beaten up lightweight tripod - good for hiking. If I'm going for a summit then it's even less - a compact Nikon P7800 with mirrorless through the lens digital view finder, full manual operation and RAW file capture - absolutely great when you still want to control your photography but need to keep moving and can't afford to have stuff hanging off you.

Feedback

Go to great places. And spend a little time establishing some rapport with your subject if it’s portrait photography. I stayed at this old lady’s old house. That’s one way to find a point of common ground and willingness to be photographed.
