Behind The Lens

Location

I took this photo in the Reptile Centre at the Melbourne Zoo in Victoria, Australia. All reptiles are enclosed behind glass in their own temperature and light controlled environment.

Time

It was on a summer's day in the afternoon.

Lighting

The reptile enclosures are in a light controlled environment: the degree of illumination would depend on the reptile's requirements. This enabled me to take the photo without having to use any lighting apparatus.

Equipment

The camera I used to take this shot was Canon 7D and a Canon 100 ml Macro lens. When I took this photo, it was a hand-held shot: I held my breadth and captured the moment.

Inspiration

I love taking photos of animals, reptiles and macro photographs. I am always looking to capture that unique essence of nature.which can be seen and flourishes throughout our world. I enjoy photos which intrigue me and inspire me to be in the moment. I enjoy taking photos which show the simple things like every feather on a wing of a bird in flight or, as here, every scale on this iguana. The colours I saw on this iguana and, in particular, the glint in his eye inspired me to take the photograph.

Editing

No, I did not do any post-processing of my photo.

In my camera bag

I normally carry several lenses, they include a Canon 70-300 ml, Canon 100 ml Macro lens, Sigma 150-500, Canon 50 ml, Canon 7D, Tamron 10-24 ml and a Mono-pod.

Feedback

My decision to use a Macro lens to capture the iguana through the glass: I really wanted to get a close-up shot of him to capture the most detail. Sometimes it is better to think outside the box, so I decided that the benefit of the Canon 100 ml Macro lens is I could use the infinity focus adjustment control to define every aspect of the iguana in the photograph.
