Love this shot. Additional kick is that there are dishes on top of the ancient looking homes.

Behind The Lens

Location

A holiday in Tuscany - a day touring round, and we stopped for lunch in the walled town of Volterra. Heading back to our car we stopped briefly to check out the view...

Time

The shot was tKen in the early afternoon on a day of mixed weather.

Lighting

The light was a mixture of cloud and sun - nothing else.

Equipment

I can’t now recall if this was taken with an iPhone or my old Nikon D300. The iPhone is such an awesome piece of kit that I came to rely on it more and more until I moved from Nikon to Fuji.

Inspiration

Tuscany has so much to give a photographer: great light, history, colour, amazing people...

Editing

This was edited in Snapseed first: a general tidy up and a little tonal contrast to enhance the clouds. I might have passed it through Lightroom when I got home, but I can’t recall. It’s as close to how I saw the view as possible, so minimum editing.

In my camera bag

Nowadays I shoot a FUJI X Pro 2 and an XT 1. Lenses are 10-24mm, 55-200mm, 56mm f1.2 (mostly for portraits) and a 27mm pancake (mostly for street). I still use my iPhone too.

Feedback

Keep your eyes open and don’t always go out ‘looking for that shot’. Watch for good clouds or an interesting sky if you’re doing landscapes and stop being so hard on yourself. Go for a success rate of about 1:15 - take 15 photos and you’ll probably find one good one...by which I mean one that YOU like!
