Location
This photo was taken at the very tip of the Pillar Point Harbour in Half Moon Bay, CATime
To get this shot I had to run to the beach from the parking lot, take the photo, and run back before the beach parking lot closed. To get the golden light with the rosy colors of sunset, I arrived a little before the official sunset in the transition phase between the golden hour and sunset.Lighting
On this shot I was lucky because the sun was setting right behind the cliff face. I used a neutral density filter to reduce the effect of the sun.Equipment
I used my nikon d5200 with the my 18-55mm kit lens on my Proline Dolica tripod. To get the silky look in the water I used a 10 stop neutral density filter with a ND4 graduated neutral density filter.Inspiration
I had been my goal for the week to photograph a sunset. I usually don't have the opportunity to photograph sunsets and sunrises often so I wanted to challenge my daily routine.Editing
I usually don't use a lot of filters so my processing workflow is very lengthy. However, for this photo I only needed to pull back the highlights and up the contrastIn my camera bag
Since I only have one lens and one camera body. The equipment I used for this photo is what I carry around every day.Feedback
The one piece of advice I would give others is that I pays off to be at a location early. Even though it may seem like a hassle to be at location 30-40 minutes earlier, you can get better shots if you have to option of taking different shots as the sun goes down. That's a bonus because if the sunset isn't as spectacular as you imagined it to be, you still have some other shots.
