Behind The Lens

Location

This is known as the Rockhouse. It is a cave in the Hocking Hills region of Ohio USA.

Time

The photo was taken in the later afternoon.

Lighting

I was standing in the dark cave looking out at the wonderful striations in the sandstone formation (known as the Black Hand Sandstone) the sunlight. outside was hitting the formation at just the right angle. Twas summertime.

Equipment

I used a handheld Nikon D3100 camera with a kit lens.

Inspiration

As I looked around the cave, the lady moved into the entrance and started to take her own photos. She was only there for a quick moment, but I saw the image and took the photo right away.

Editing

I did convert to black and white using NIK plugins with Photoshop Elements. Adjusted contrast and added structure to bring out the striations, and adjusted exposure due to the stronger light outside.

In my camera bag

D3100 camera body two kit lenses, cleaning cloth, cpl filter, and water to keep hydrated. I have been trying to lighten the bag. This makes me focus on what type of shots I am looking for at a particular location. Also my back appreciates the lighter load.

Feedback

Fortunately I didn't have to change the camera settings very much as the opportunity was a fleeting moment. I had already been taking shots from inside cave to the outside. Be aware of things around you when shooting as sometimes a unique opportunity will present itself, even if it doesn't last long. I did approach the woman, showed her the shot in camera and sent her a copy of the edited photo after I got home. She was very appreciative. I have embraced using random people that are also in the area to provide scale to the photo.
